NEWPORT -The Pend Oreille Pines Soccer Club HS team won a hardfought victory against Cheney’s FC Storm at Stratton Elementary field Saturday, Oct. 25. This puts them second in the league.
The 3-2 win started with a goal scored by Daryan Haidari on a penalty shot. Cooper Ericksen shot another one and Griffin Bilaski rounded out a third that hit the back of the net.
Keeper Jack Youk had several saves, including one on a very close penalty shot.
Priest River cancelled its high school boys’ season, but players Jaden Stevens and Daryan Haidari were able to play for the Pines instead.
Stevens was honored on Saturday in lieu of his HS “Senior Night” with “Senior Day” including gifts, remarks given by Stevens read by Coach Tim Chilcott, and a photo board showing his soccer evolution from childhood to the present.
The Pines play three more games before they conclude for the season.
Grizzly soccer clips Eagles’ wings
NEWPORT – Grizzly girls’ soccer bested the Reardan Screaming Eagles, 2-1, in a home game Thursday, Oct. 23. Newport’s Delaney Brandtner scored an 8th minute goal with an assist by Lily Verity. Reardan got their goal in the 42nd minute, to send the game into overtime.
Brandtner was back with an assist by Allie Ericksen to score in the 87th minute to get the win. Newport had 17 shots on goal and Reardan had nine. Newport’s goalie Emmalee Doughty made eight saves to Reardan’s nine.
Earlier last week Newport hosted Davenport, losing 6-2 Tuesday, Oct. 21. The Grizzlies scored their two goals in the 52nd minute, led by Paige Rivera with an assist by Joelle Brandtner. The two switched it up for Newport’s second goal in the 57th minute, with Rivera assisting. Newport had 10 shots on goal and Davenport had 24. Grizzly goalies Emma Verity and Paige Ribera had 15 saves and two saves, respectively. Davenport had seven.
Newport traveled to Kettle Falls for a game Tuesday after the newspaper deadline. The Grizzlies go to Northwest Christian for a game Thursday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m.
Cusick volleyball loses twice, wins once
CUSICK — The Cusick Senior High School volleyball team only won one of their final three games of the season.
Despite that, Cusick finished third in the Northeast 1B North league at seven wins and seven losses.
Tuesday, Oct. 21 the Panthers visited Selkirk, taking the Rangers to five sets but losing 3-2. They followed that loss with a win hosting Inchelium Saturday, Oct. 25, with Cusick winning 3-0. The Panthers’ final game of the season, a Saturday, Oct. 25 home game against Northport, ended with a 3-0 loss. Cusick’s Monday, Oct. 27 home game against Selkirk was canceled.
