YOUR OPINION

First let me say this, “I have never vote against a school bond levy!” That being said, there is no way the Newport and Newport area residents can afford the current school bond levy being proposed.

Apparently this school district has forgotten they work in one of the poorest counties in the state of Washington, if not the poorest. Further, I would like to explain the difference between wants and needs. This explanation is one I used when working with you people with you people in my 25 years in the financial world. Needs are things you must have to survive. (or educate in theis case). Wants are things that would be nice to have but not necessary to survive (or in theis case educa).

1. Needs: The roof, HVAC,system technical training facilities, safety and possibly classroom upgrades may be needs. The is imperative to good learning which is, afer all, the point of school.

2. Wants every other ting on the list with the exception of library upgrade that may be needed depending on coordination with public library.

Please take time to look at the list available in in the survey.

Antifa simply means antifascism

Are you confused by the word “antifa”? It simply means antifascism.

My Webster dictionary defines fascism as “a system of government characterized by rigid one-party dictatorship, forcible suppression of opposition, private economic enterprise under centralized government control, belligerent nationalism, racism, and militarism, etc.” In other words, fascism is pretty much the opposite of democracy.

So the 7 million or so “No Kings” protestors – all pro-democracy – are also antifa. None of them however are members of “Antifa,” because there is no such organization, let alone a “terrorist organization.”

All of us who love America owe the “No Kings” protestors enormous thanks for their efforts to preserve our precious though imperfect democracy. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What the heck!

We have a Maga President, a Maga Senate and a Maga Congress and they won’t even open the government. But they could.

Think Epstein files. We have the richest man in the world starving the poorest children in the world.

Waste Fraud and Abuse is the Maga mantra. They do it all.

Wake up neighbors.

Spring is the right candidate for Newport

I am endorsing John Spring for Newport City Council. John Spring is 19 years old and is concerned about the future of the City of Newport. Instead of complaining, John Spring decided to make a difference and run for a position on the city council. Currently John is the youngest member to serve on the planning board and regularly attends council meetings. He is a high school graduate and is employed. John Spring is determined to make Newport a community to be proud of. His infectious enthusiasm and inquisitive manner are needed to revive the current council which appears to be asleep, ineffective and barely breathing.

Mayor Keith Campbell expressed concern about John’s lack of experience. Does the mayor mean that John is not skill at being cynical, self-serving, dismissive or apathetic If so the mayor is correct! John Spring has been campaigning for several months interacting with residents and listening to their concerns while seeking more information about how to make change happen. Some of John’s greatest gifts are that he treats Newport citizens with respect and kindness., a genuine willingness to listen and is ready to put in the effort to do a good job. The current council and City Administrator would do well to follow John Spring’s example.

Tearing down of East Wing is a travesty

I am beyond outraged as I watch the destruction of the historic and beloved East Wing of the White House. It’s a symbol of all that is good about America and is an icon of democracy. Who among us, whether Democrat, Republican, or Independent, hasn’t felt their heart swell with pride at everything the White House symbolizes? It’s unbelievable that this destruction could happen without any discussion or oversight by Congress.

Demolition began two days after the largest protest in our history, with seven million people rejecting the notion that our president is not a king who can do whatever he pleases. It’s been 250 years since we declared our independence from a mad, tyrannical king who ruled the colonies with an iron fist.

America is OUR country, built on the blood, sweat, and tears of our forefathers. They sacrificed that we might come together to form a country where each one of us has a voice in our democracy, not to merely submit to the whims and grievances of an authoritarian. It’s time that our representatives and the courts step up and defend our constitution. Does our representative, Michael Baumgartner, approve of this travesty?

Journalism isn’t dying

People often say journalism is dying — that truth has been traded for clicks, that outrage sells better than honesty. But I think something steadier is rising, especially in small towns like ours.

Readers still crave facts that don’t come pre-packaged with politics. They want reporting that feels grounded, written by someone who actually walked the streets before writing about them. Maybe what we’re seeing isn’t the end of journalism, but its return — back to community papers, independent voices, and readers who still believe that truth matters.

Good reporting doesn’t belong to big corporations. It belongs to all of us — the people who ask, “Who’s in charge?” and “Who’s paying attention?”

So thank you to the local papers and independent writers who keep showing up. Journalism isn’t dying; it’s coming home.

Spin vs Reality

In reading the No Kings Rally article in The Newport Miner I found our congressman’s response very interesting. He could not pass up the opportunity to shift the blame on our present political and economic environment.

“While there were certainly elements sponsoring the protest, such as the Communist Party, I would not classify them overall as such.” He also commented on the “irony in the theme of the protest given that if Trump were in fact a king, he would be able to reopen the government.” Blaming the government closure on the Democrats.

If you look at the No Kings rallies nationwide, and Newport, it was about fundamental issues. Many of these center on the bill you supported: A bill that will increase health insurance premiums for many people. The increase in funding for ICE who are detaining innocent citizens because of their skin color of accent. Taking away funds for SNAP yet providing additional tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. These are only a few selected examples.

Your actions speak volumes over your rhetoric.

At least I have photos

I went on a tour of the White House in 2019 and entered through the now non-existent East Wing. At least I have my photos of the wing before it was destroyed by Trump. What’s gone is gone and I can’t wait to have a dinner in the new Trump ballroom with 999 other people. I would love to tour the small kitchen that is going to make 1,000 meals for a 7 p.m. sitting. Why didn’t Trump just float a dining room from a mega cruise ship onto the White House lawn?

I would love to tour the historic room where the plates and utensils will be stored and the room where they will keep thousands of chairs and tables. On second thought, why didn’t Trump move a Las Vegas casino ballroom with fake gold statues next to the former East Wing?

Then there was the Trump video of him flying a jet fighter and dumping diarrhea on the No Kings demonstrators. I worked for Lockheed, the company that made our spy planes and other secret weapons. Trump gave away our secret and newest diarrhea stealth fighter just like he gave away the East Wing of our White House.
