Veterans Day events plentiful in Pend Oreille Valley

NEWPORT – If fellowship, comradery and commemoration are what you are looking for to celebrate Veterans Day this year, there’s plenty of opportunities. Beginning this week and going through the actual holiday on Tuesday, Nov. 11, organizations around the Pend Oreille River Valley are hosting events to recognize and honor veterans. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, Veterans Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed annually in honor of all those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Selkirk’s Middle School/ High School Music Program will present their annual Veterans Day concert Thursday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. in the high school gym. The public is invited to attend to honor veterans and enjoy a performance by Selkirk’s music students.

The school is located at 10372 Hwy. 31, Ione.

Newport School District will have a Veterans Day celebration Friday, Nov. 7. All veterans are invited to the Newport High School multi-purpose room for donuts and coffee at 8:30 a.m. Starting at 9 a.m. the public is invited to an assembly in the high school gym.

The school is located at 1380 5th St., Newport.

Cusick School District will be holding an all-district Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. in the high school gym. The public is invited to attend.

The district is located at 305 Monumental Way, Cusick.

The Blanchard Grange hosts a free breakfast for veterans Tuesday, Nov. 11, 8-9:30 a.m. Cost is $5 for non-veterans.

The grange is located at 459 Rusho Lane, Blanchard.

Priest River Elementary School hosts a Veterans Day assembly Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 8:45 a.m. in the gym. All veterans and the public are invited to attend. Veterans are encouraged to stay afterward for donuts.

The school is located at 231 Harriet St., Priest River.

The American Legion Calispel Unit #217 will hold a ceremony honoring veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m. at the Newport Cemetery. The public is invited to attend. There will be a flag burning ceremony afterwards to properly re- tire American flags that are too worn to be flown. The public is invited to attend and learn more about this process and/or bring an American flag that needs to be replaced.

The cemetery is located at 161 Cemetery Rd., Newport.

The Kalispel Casino is hosting a Veterans Day Giveaway Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Veterans can come in and spin the prize wheel to win up to $100 in cash. There is no entry fee, but military ID must be provided.

The casino is located at 420 Qlispe River Way, Cusick.

There will be a Veterans Day celebration at Priest River Lamanna Jr./Sr. High School Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1:20 p.m.

All community members are welcome to attend.

The school is located at 596 Hwy. 57, Priest River.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #217 is hosting a Veterans Day dinner Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the American Legion in Cusick. There will be a short program at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at approximately 5:20 p.m. Dinner for veterans and one guest will be free. All other guests can purchase dinner for $10 each.

There will also be door prizes for veterans.

The menu is pot roast, Marry Me Chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad bar and cake. To RSVP, sign up on the sheet that is on the door at the Post or call 509-445-1537 or 509671-2163.

The American Legion Post is located at 105 Timber St., Cusick.

The annual Salute to Service prime rib dinner and auction is Saturday, Nov. 15 at American Legion Kaniksu Post #144 in Metaline Falls. This event is open to members and their guests and reservations are required no later than Wednesday, Nov.

12. Social hour starts at 4 p.m., dinner at 5 p.m. and the auction starts at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $35 per person.
