Newport runners off to state

COLFAX – Grizzly harriers are state-bound after senior Aimee Busby and sophomore Olivia Collins cracked the top 20 at the District 6 1B/2B Regional Championship in Colfax Friday, Oct. 31. Busby placed ninth at 19:48 and Collins placed 15th at 20:05.

“No state predictions, but I will say that the performances of every athlete on our team at regionals were nothing short of spectacular,” coach Morgan Johnson said. “Every single athlete on our team set personal records at the race. This is incredibly rare. In comparison we had only one athlete set a personal record at this same race last year. The total time across our 13 athletes for their personal records was around 25 minutes.”

Newport girls finished seventh overall with a score of 141 in the girls’ 5,000-meter varsity 1B/2B race. Newport boys placed 10th overall in the 5,000-meter varsity 2B race with a score of 262. Senior William Rheinford finished 34th with a time of 18:28. Classmate Donovan Mason came in 45th at 19:28. Freshman Elijah Satleen came in 59th place at 20:34.

The Grizzlies head to Pasco for the 2025 WIAA State XC Championships Saturday, Nov. 8.
