Newport faces Freeman Wednesday
LIBERTY LAKE – Newport girls’ soccer had a 2-1 victory over Upper Columbia Academy Monday, Nov. 3 at The Hub Sports Center in Liberty Lake. Newport had their first goal in the game’s fourth minute from Delaney Brandtner, followed by a goal from Joelle Brandtner in the 16th minute. UCA got their one and only goal in the 49th minute. Goalie Emmalee Doughty had three saves and UCA had five. Newport took six shots on goal and UCS took three.
The Grizzlies (8-8-2, 5-8) face first place seed Freeman next, Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. If Newport upsets Freeman, Newport will play in the District championship game Saturday at 6 p.m. If they lose Wednesday, they will play in the third/fourth place game Saturday at 4 p.m. All games are at the Hub Sports Center.
Cusick volleyball out after two losses
CUSICK — The Cusick Senior High School volleyball team was eliminated from the Northeast 1B North league championship tournament after two losing games last week.
Heading into the tournament, the Panthers (7-7, 7-11) had finished the season third in the league.
In an opening round game Thursday, Oct. 30 at Wilbur-Creston-Keller, Cusick lost to Almira/ Coulee-Hartline (10-2, 17-3) 3-0. The Panthers then played Northport (10-1, 13-5) in a loser-out game later that day, but lost again 3-0, eliminating them from the tournament.
Sandwick headed to state
COLFAX – Cusick’s Richard Sandwick is headed to the state championship this weekend after winning fourth place at the District 6 1B/2B Regional Championship in Colfax, Friday, Oct. 31. Sandwick clocked in at 16:42 in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity 1B race. Freshman Nick Sandwick placed 16th with a time of 18:02. Classmate James Lilya finished at 45th at 20:16.
Richard Sandwick and coach Sophia Larson are headed to the 2025 WIAA State XC Championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, Saturday, Nov. 8.
Grizzlies play first district games
NEWPORT — The Newport High School volleyball team played their first district games Tuesday, Nov. 4 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
Heading into the district tournament, the Grizzlies (8-4, 11-5) had finished their season third in the Northeast 2B North league. They were behind Davenport (10-2, 11-4) at second and Northwest Christian (13-0, 16-1) at first in the league.
For Newport’s first district game, the Grizzlies visited Lind-Ritzville/ Sprague (9-2, 14-2) at Northwest Christian. They played two games that day and had to win at least one to advance to the second round Thursday, Nov. 6.
