Ione man held for attempted murder

NEWORT – A 31-year-old Ione man is being held in the Pend Oreille County Jail on charges of attempted second degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and assault in the second degree.

Martin Gardner Chamberlain Jr. was seen in Pend Oreille District Court Monday, Nov. 3, for a first appearance. His bond was set at $250,000.

According to Sheriff Glenn Blakeslee, Chamberlain was arrested in Stevens County in the early morning hours of Halloween following a verbal argument with a woman. Both Chamberlain and the woman had restraining orders against one another, which is unusual in Washington, he said. The woman said that the man fired a weapon at her.

“There was evidence to believe there was a shot fired at the vehicle sometime by somebody and deputies had enough to believe he was the suspect,” Blakeslee said. The incident occurred in Pend Oreille County, he said but the man was arrested in Stevens County following a be-on-thelookout alert. “Sounds like Steven County had contact with him and had him wait at the scene until we go there,” Blakeslee said. Chamberlain was arrested without incident.
