Sunday will tell for Newport

NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzly football team won’t know who it will face in the first game of the state playoffs until this weekend.

“We will know who we play this coming weekend,” Newport coach Mark Duxbury says. Sean Bessette, communications director for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association says the 2025 State Football Brackets will be released this Sunday, Nov. 9.

The Northeast 2B League is divided into two tiers. The first-tier teams are Freeman, Asotin, Ritzville, Reardan, Northwest Christian, Chewelah and Newport. The second tier is Colfax, Liberty, Kettle Falls and Davenport.

The second-tier league plays each other twice, Duxbury says.

“Their first-place team plays the first tier second place team for a playoff seed. We have four playoff seeds out of the 11 teams.”

Friday there will be qualifying games, with Freeman, the No. 2 team from the first tier, playing Colfax, the first-place team from the second tier. Northwest Christian, the No. 3 team from the first tier plays No. 6 Ritzville and No. 4 Asotin plays No. 5 Reardan.

Newport will play one of the winners. Colfax is ranked No. 1 in the Northeast 2B League, with a 7-0 league record. Newport is No. 2, with a 6-0 league record, according to the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association.

They are among a handful of undefeated 2B teams in the state, including DeSale, Tri-Cities Prep, Wishkah Valley and Toledo.
