SelPort finishes with win over Yakama Tribal School

TOPPENISH – The SelPort Lumberjacks wound up their season with a game against the Yakama Nation Tribal Eagles, with the Lumberjacks finishing the season with a 36-22 win.

“I was proud of the guys being able to stick it out and end on a high note. It was great working with them and watching their improvement over the season,” SelPort coach Kelly Cain says.

SelPort scored first with a 2-yard run by sophomore Slate Parker in the first quarter.

Another sophomore, Blain Riekers, scored next for the Lumberjacks in the second quarter on a 7-yard touchdown run. Eighth grade quarterback Logan Maupin connected with fellow eighth grader Max Glasgow for the 2-point conversion pass. The Lumberjacks went into the half ahead 14-0.

SelPort scored again in the third quarter on a 25-yard Maupin to junior Henry Thompson pass play. Maupin hit Glasgow for another 2-point conversion pass.

The Eagles got their first score on a pass play, although they could not make the extra point conversion pass.

The Eagles were back in the end zone again in the third quarter with another passing touchdown, this time completing the 2-poinit conversion pass. At the end of the third quarter the Lumberjacks were still up 22-14.

In the fourth quarter Riekers scored his second rushing touchdown, following it up with a 2-point conversion run. He ended up with 196 yards on 23 carries, his longest a 35 yarder. Maupin rushed for 71 yards on nine carries.

He completed two out of three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Sutton led in tackles, with nine takedowns, including five solo tackles. He and Glasgow combined a tackle for a loss and Glasgow had another of his own. Sutton also had an interception, as did Brayden Tucker.

Johnny Oberholtzer was in on seven tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. Tristan VanArsdall had a sack and a tackle for a loss.

For the year, Riekers ran for 1,000 yards and was selected second team all-league at running back. Judah Creach was a first team selection on defense as a linebacker, and second team offense as a lineman. Charlie Anderson was second team all-purpose on defense.

The Lumberjacks finished the season with a 1-7 overall record.
