LIBERTY LAKE — Newport girls’ soccer lost to Davenport, 7-1 Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Hub Sports Center in Liberty Lake, ending the Grizzlies’ bid to make it to the state championship tournament. The third-seeded Gorillas (163) eliminated the visiting fifth-seeded Grizzlies (7-102) in the District 6 2B/1B third place game. Davenport advances to state.

“We made a valiant effort and came up a little short,” coach Laura Verity said.
Earlier last week on Nov. 5, Freeman beat Newport at The Hub, 8-0. Freeman’s Rylee Russell scored four goals with Nola Gass adding two goals, and the top-seeded Scotties (15-2) shut out the visiting Grizzlies in the District 6 2B/1B semifinal game. Newport had three shots on goal and an unknown number of saves. The Scotties’ Delaney Abustallo finished with a goal plus two assists and Kelsey Hollen had three saves for Freeman.
Last Saturday, Freeman (16-2) defeated the second-seeded Northwest Christian Crusaders (15-3) in a 3-2 shootout for the District 6 2B/1B championship. Both teams advance to state. Freeman plays Pateros on Wednesday, Nov. 12 and Northwest Christian played Onalaska Tuesday, Nov. 11 after The Miner Newspapers’ deadline.
