OUR OPINION
Some of you may be surprised, even shocked that I’m not much of a sports hobbyist in my spare time. I know, sorry for mussing your hair after blowing it back with that confession. Sports got in the way of theatre when I was a kid and I was much more apt to stretch my dramatic skills than I was my muscles before a 100-meter sprint.
But I would argue that theatre and sports have more in common than 15-year-old me thought. Performing on the stage is all about telling a story and communicating with your fellow cast and crew to put forth the best effort you can. Sports are also about putting forth your best effort and communicating with teammates.
And there are a lot of fascinating narratives in the world of sports. You don’t have to be a sports nut to enjoy a good story. And our local high school teams have brought a lot of that heart to the field and courtside this season. You’ll get a glimpse of it in this week’s Newport Football tab. You see it every time you attend a game for one of our four school districts in the Pend Oreille River Valley and we attempt to capture some of it for you in our weekly sports section.
The point is, whether you have kids or not, whether you like sports or not, our youth and the people who tend to their emotional growth, on or off the field, on or off the stage, or whatever extracurricular they happen to explore, deserve our time and attention in whatever way we can provide. As Newport Grizzly football heads to their state playoff game in Cheney this coming Saturday, whether you’re watching in person, at home or listening on 91.5 KUBS FM, lets strive to be the audience our kids deserve. Because it’s a story we can all get behind.
