Two games start Rangers’ season

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played their first two games of the season this week.

The first was at Kettle Falls Saturday, Nov. 29. That night, the Lady Rangers lost 37-42.

“It definitely looked like a first game,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says. “It was pretty sloppy. Our effort was good, but our execution needs to clean up some.”

The Lady Rangers had too many unforced turnovers and allowed Kettle Falls too many second chances, Cain says. They need to work better as a unit defensively and learn to trust one another.

Despite their loss, Cain says the Lady Rangers made a nice run at Kettle Falls in the second half, cutting down the deficit to only 5 points with just over a minute left. However, they were unable to finish before time ran out.

“All in all, it was good to finally get out and get a game under our belt,” Cain says.

That game’s scorers were Millie Rice with 13 points, Kinley Petrich with 10, Marisa Lyons with 8 and Chloe Kardos with 6.

The Selkirk boys and girls played again at home against Valley Christian Tuesday, Dec. 2 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.

With their Friday, Dec. 5 game against Odessa canceled, both teams are ending the week hosting Wellpinit Saturday, Dec. 6. The junior varsity boys play at 3:30 p.m., followed by the girls varsity and then the boys varsity.
