Newport comes up short

NEWPORT — The Newport Grizzlies boys’ basketball team had a rough start Thursday, Dec. 4, when they fell to Riverside 83-48 in a non-league game at Riverside.

“We played better in the second half,” says Newport coach Jason Coolbaugh. The Rams outscored the Grizzlies 38-17 in the first half. The Rams still had the most points in the second half but Newport generated 31 to Riverside’s 45 in the second half. Junior Damien Hamburg was high scorer for Newport with 15 points and fellow juniors Jayden Hunt and Jordan Sawyer hit 3-pointers.

The next night Newport was at home against Colville, losing a 77-41 contest to the bigger school. The Grizzlies trailed 42-21 at the half. Sophomore Keaton Shultz and Sawyer hit 3-pointers for Newport.

The Grizzlies go to Priest River for a game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10. They travel to St. George’s for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday. Dec. 12 and are at home against Kettle Falls at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Tuesday. Dec. 16, they go to Northwest Christian for a 6 p.m. game.
