Rangers wrangle first wins

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team netted their first wins of the season at two home games last week.

Their first game was Tuesday, Dec. 2 against Valley Christian, who lost 46-44.

“We were able to get our first W of the year which was nice,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says. “Still have a lot to work on and improve, but the effort was good.”

Selkirk took the lead 14-10 in the first quarter but had fallen behind 26-39 by the end of the third quarter. The Rangers kept battling, Cain says, scoring 20-15 in the fourth quarter and securing the win by 2 points.

“We executed pretty well at the end of the game which was good to see,” Cain says.

Leading point-getters were Millie Rice with 17 and Chloe Kardos with 10. Kinley Petrich had 11 rebounds.

They and the rest of the Rangers next hosted Wellpinit Saturday, Dec. 6, winning 46-29. Selkirk took the lead in the first quarter 12-5 and held onto it for the rest of the game.

“This was our best overall game to date,” Cain says. “Seeing improvement in some of the areas we have been emphasizing in the early part of the season.”

Rice got 19 points that night, Petrich 11. Petrich also had four assists and seven steals. Jessa Culianan led in rebounds with nine.

“We want to keep building on what we are doing and smooth out some of the rough spots,” Cain says.

This weekend, the Rangers have two more games. The first is at home against Curlew Thursday, Dec. 12, the second at home against Chesterton Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. They end the week with another away game against Cusick Tuesday, Dec. 16. Play that night starts at 4:15 p.m.
