IONE — The Selkirk boys’ basketball team opened their home season with a win 61-55 against Valley Christian Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The game started with a 10-10 first quarter but Selkirk pulled ahead in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 30-21 lead. The Rangers added to their lead with a 14-9 third quarter before Valley Christian rallied with a 25-14 final quarter. The game had 49 fouls, 26 against Selkirk and 23 against Valley Christian, with three players fouling out, two for the Rangers and one for Valley Christian.
Keaton Arrastio and Porter Larson led Ranger scoring, scoring 14 points each. The Rangers hit seven 3-pointers, led by Larson who hit four.
Selkirk had a more difficult time the week before when they lost to Kettle Falls 65-29.
The Rangers trailed 19-2 at the end of the first quarter, scored a dozen points in the second quarter but didn’t crack double figures in either of the last two quarters.
But the Rangers kept their momentum after Valley Christian, getting a 59-44 home win against Wellpinit Saturday, Dec. 6.
The Rangers used a big second quarter to take the lead after trailing Wellpinit in the first quarter, heading into halftime with a 30-27 lead. Selkirk clamped down defensively in the third quarter, holding Wellpinit to six points, while adding 10 more to their lead to take a 46-33 lead into the final quarter, outscoring Wellpinit 13-11 in the fourth quarter.
Selkirk coach Brodi Larson said he was happy with the team’s rebounding, with Selkirk outrebounding Wellpinit 43-32. Larson said the Rangers had too many turnovers, though, with 24.
Arrastio had a game high 31 points.
Selkirk (2-1) hosts Curlew Friday, Dec. 12, at 7:15 p.m. The next night the Rangers are at home against Nespelem for a game Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Rangers go to Cusick for a game at 7:15 p.m.
