NEWPORT — After two away game losses, the Newport High School girls’ basketball team ended last week with a win at home.
Newport (2-3, 1-1) first lost 36-25 to cross-border rival Priest River (3-1) Wednesday, Dec. 20. (See related story.)
Their second loss was Friday, Dec. 22 against St. George’s (1-5, 1-2). That night, St. George’s scored the most points they had scored all year in a single game, winning 55-30.
Newport coach Thad Trepanier says St. George executed very well throughout the game, getting hot and making their free throws.
“We, on the other hand, did not execute to the best of our abilities,” Trepanier says.
Despite that, Grace Parry lead Newport with 10 points. Sammi Tellessen made two 3-pointers, Grace Keck one.
Newport made up for the two losses Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Grizzlies hosted Kettle Falls (2-4, 0-2) and won 39-32. Trepanier says that overall, they played well.
“We played with energy and aggressiveness on both ends of the floor for the entirety of the game,” Trepanier says.
Parry had her third double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Tellessen added 10 points, along with seven rebounds and five assists.
The Grizzlies next go to Jenkins in Chewelah at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. They end the week with two winter tournament games at West Valley, the first against Medical Lake at noon Saturday, Dec. 27 and the second against Northport at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30.
