NEWPORT — The Newport boys’ basketball team struggled to get a win last week, losing games to St. George’s Friday, Dec. 12 and Kettle Falls Saturday, Dec. 13.
Friday at St. George’s, Newport lost the Northeast 2B League game 52-32. The Grizzlies 26-10 at the half. They did better in the second half but couldn’t make up the difference. Jameson Oaks led Newport scoring with nine points.
The next night the Grizzlies were at home against Kettle Falls for another league game. Newport played better in this game, although Newport lost 67-38.
Newport had only trailed by two at the end of the first quarter 12-10. In the second quarter Newport couldn’t get shots to fall while giving up too many turnovers. At halftime Kettle Falls led 28-16.
Newport scored more in the third quarter but couldn’t close the gap and was down 36-27 heading into the final quarter in which the Bulldogs put the game away with a 21-12 quarter.
Oaks led Newport scoring again, this time with 16 points, including a 3-pointer, with Damien Hamberg scoring 11 for Newport. Oaks also had a dozen rebounds. Gryphen Bilaski had nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals to go with four points.
The Newport Grizzlies go to Chewelah for a game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19.
