METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team kept their win streak last week after two more home games.
The first was Friday, Dec. 12 against Curlew (4-2, 1-2), who lost 40-31 to Selkirk (4-1, 2-0) in the Rangers’ first Northeast 1B North league game.
“This was a big win,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says. “It’s nice to start league play on top and to defend home court.”
Selkirk took the lead from the first quarter, reaching intermission with 15 points where Curlew had 7. Curlew managed to score 13 points in the third quarter, 8 more than the Rangers, who Cain says got into some serious foul trouble. Despite that, the Rangers rallied around each other until they made a comeback in the fourth quarter, where they scored half their total points. Curlew only scored 11.
“Our defense was pretty solid,” Cain says. “We had some very specific things we wanted to do and with few exceptions we were able to get that done.”
Lead point-getters were Millie Rice with 19 and both Chloe Kardos and Kinley Petrich with 8. Kardos also had nine rebounds, while Marisa Lyons had six steals and four assists.
They and the rest of the Rangers next hosted Chesterton (1-4, 1-0) Saturday, Dec. 13, winning 37-25.
“We did what we needed to do, but definitely have some things to clean up,” Cain says.
Though they were in the lead from the first quarter, the Rangers struggled to block out and rebound against Chesterton, whose players are tall and aggressive. By intermission, Selkirk was only ahead 14-9, even scoring 3 points fewer than Chesterton in the fourth quarter.
“Felt like we came out a little flat,” Cain says. Rice and Laylee Strickler led with 15 and 9 points. Lyons had six assists.
Selkirk next has three games. They go to Columbia Friday, Dec. 19, then Inchelium Saturday, Dec. 20 for two away games, ending their week at home against Wilbur Monday, Dec. 22. The varsity girls follow the junior varsity boys each night, with play starting at 4 p.m. Dec. 19, 2:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 3 p.m. Dec. 22.
