CUSICK — The Cusick Panthers boys’ basketball team got a 64-51 win over league rival Selkirk Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Cusick.
That game started tight with an 11-11 first quarter but Cusick started to pull away in the second quarter and closed the game with a 19-9 fourth quarter.
Cusick went to Nespelem for a game Friday, Dec. 19, where they got a 95-34 win. They followed it up with an 83-50 win at home Saturday, Dec. 10 against Columbia- Hunters.

Cusick doesn’t play until next year, when they play Chesterton Friday, Jan. 2 at the HUB in Spokane.
Hatten, Goins make All State football
PRIEST RIVER — Wide Receiver Layton Goins was named to the All State 3A Football first team, joined by offensive lineman Brady Hatten. Hatten, a senior, was also named as a defensive lineman the All State Second team. Goins was one of only two sophomores selected for All State honors.
The selections are made by the coaches in each classification. Orofino defensive back Landon Connoly was the only other Central Idaho League player selected for first team honors. Wide receiver Tate Schmacher of Grangeville and Brock Barta of St Maries were CIL players selected for second team offense.
Panthers lose, then win
CUSICK — After another loss, the Cusick High School girls’ basketball team won their first Northeast 1B North league game last week.
The Panthers (2-5, 1-4) lost 34-45 to the Selkirk Rangers (7-1, 5-0) Tuesday, Dec. 16 at home. (See related story.)
They next hosted Columbia (0-7, 0-6) Saturday, Dec. 20, winning 54-11. Columbia is fielding a girls’ varsity team for the first time in a few years, and many of their players are young and inexperienced.
The Panthers resume play next week after Christmas Break.
Lady Grizzlie split week
NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team went into Winter Break last weekend with another loss and another win.
Tuesday, Dec. 16, Newport (3-4, 2-2) visited Northwest Christian (6-0, 4-0) in Colbert, losing 75-19. Northwest Christian took the lead in the first quarter and held it for the rest of the game, though Newport managed to score 8 points in the first and third quarters and another 3 in the fourth. Tellessen led in points with 9 from three 3-pointers. Marri Hinchcliff added another 3-pointer.
They and the rest of the Grizzlies next visited Jenkins (0-6, 0-3) in Chewelah Friday, Dec. 19, where they won 39-30.
Lead point-getters were Grace Parry with 13, Grace Keck with 10 and Tellessen with 9. Tellessen also scored a 3-pointer.
The Grizzlies next go to West Valley for two more games. The first is against Medical Lake at noon Saturday, Dec. 27, the second against Northport at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30.
