NEWPORT — The Newport boys’ basketball team played Northwest Christian and Chewelah’s Jenkins last week, coming up short against both in Northeast 2B League games.
They were competitive against the undefeated Crusaders, although they lost 62-42 at Northwest Christian Tuesday, Dec. 16.
The teams played a 12-11 first quarter, with the Crusaders leading. They expanded their lead in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies were within striking distance, trailing 30-23 at the half and got a point closer in the third quarter, outscoring the Crusaders 13-12.
Northwest Christian picked it up in the last quarter, securing the win with an 18-6 finish. The Grizzlies had trouble stopping the Crusaders’ top scorer, Caleb Grant, who tallied 38 points. Jameson Oaks led Newport scoring with 15 and Damien Hamberg scored 12.
Newport traveled to Chewelah Friday, where the Cougars came out on top 52-29.
The Grizzlies had a tough start, only scoring 10 points in the first half. They trailed by 22 at halftime. Newport outscored Chewelah 14-11 in the third quarter and the teams played a low-scoring fourth quarter, with neither scoring in double figures.
Hamberg was top scorer for Newport with nine points.
Newport next plays after Christmas in the West Valley tournament in Spokane Valley. Saturday, Dec. 27, they’ll play Medical Lake at 10:30 a.m. in the main gym and Tuesday, Dec. 30, they’ll face Deer Park at 1:30 p.m. in the field house gym.
