Spartan boys first quarter strong in loss to Sandpoint

SANDPOINT — The Priest River Spartan boys basketball team played a 14-14 first quarter against Sandpoint Thursday, Dec. 18, but couldn’t keep up with the Bulldogs the rest of the game, losing 77-26.

“We played them even the first (quarter) and then they went on a big run,” says Brian Hall, Priest River’s new coach.

Playing their fourth game in six days with a new coach and just one practice, the Spartans did well to stay competitive the first quarter.

“They figured out our transition and were able to use their dominant size to beat us,” Hall says. Sandpoint has multiple players over 6 feet tall, including 6-feet, 6-inch Logan Roos, who scored a game high 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

“We were not able to stop them in the paint or on the boards,” Hall says.

Ian Lamanna scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Spartans. Brady Hatten also had five rebounds and Jacob Best had four boards. Lamanna, Best and Hatten also had two steals each. Lucas Matthews scored 8 points for the Priest River, with two 3-pointers.

Hall is looking forward to some practice sessions.

“We now have two weeks to prepare for our next game, which is Tuesday, Jan. 6, against Sandpoint once again,” he says.

The Spartans play Sandpoint at home Tuesday, Jan. 6.
