NEWPORT — Newport hosted Davenport Wednesday, Dec. 17 in the wrestling NE2B League Matchup. Also included were some wrestlers from Liberty Launch Academy. Newport won the meetup overall, besting Davenport 48-36. Davenport and Liberty Launch Academy 48-36.
Trenden Ellison got the Grizzlies started with a pin at 132 pounds. Preston Wacenske worked his way to a pin at 144. Nate Shaw picked up a pin at 150. Gavvin Carter upset number two-ranked Davenport wrestler with a pin as well. Senior Prestyn Holley came up with a pin at 165. Connor McQuinn also helped secure the team win by getting a pin in the first round. Team newcomer Alex Garris secured his first victory of the season by getting a pin at 113.
“We knew Davenport would be a tough test, but we were up for the challenge,” coach Daniel Swain says. “I’m excited to see where we go from here.”
Newport also competed at the Best of The West Dual Tournament last Friday, Dec. 19 in Pasco.
Newport traveled to East Valley High Monday, Dec. 22 after deadline. According to the team’s schedule there will be a tournament in Freeman Tuesday, Dec. 30 (TBA).
