What does democracy mean locally?

PRIEST RIVER — While national politics often dominate headlines, Idaho State historian Markie McBrayer will be giving a presentation that invites attendees to reflect on the health of democracy closer to home.

McBrayer will be at the Priest River Library Saturday at 11 a.m. Jan. 3 to discuss election frequency and timing, the role of nonpartisan elections, at-large versus single member districts and how proposed changes to these systems might affect communities like Priest River and more broadly, Idaho.

He will also discuss ways that local participation can have a larger impact and how individuals can get involved at the local level.

The public is invited to this informative talk on one of the finals weekends of the Smithsonian exhibit, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America. The exhibit now ends Saturday, Jan. 17.
