CUSICK — The Cusick High School girls’ basketball team is resuming play this week starting Friday, Jan. 2, when the Panthers visit Chesterton at Spokane Hub at 3 p.m. They then visit the Selkirk Rangers for a rematch at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3. Cusick starts next week at home against Northport at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Newport wrestling on the road
NEWPORT — Newport High School wrestling traveled to Freeman Tuesday, Dec. 30 after the newspaper’s deadline. The team travels to Boise for the Rollie Lane Tournament Friday to Saturday, Dec. 1 to 2. Wednesday, Dec. 7, Newport travels to Davenport for a league match.
Newport starts slow at West Valley
SPOKANE VALLEY – Deer Park went on a 20-5 first quarter run against Newport in the Eagle Holiday Classic at West Valley Saturday, Dec. 27, a deficit the Grizzlies couldn’t overcome. Newport outscored the Stags 12-10 in the second quarter, but had a poor shooting second half where they never got out of single digit scoring in either of the last two quarters, losing the game 63-30. Deer Park hit eight 3-pointers. Damien Hamberg was top scorer for Newport with eight points.
Newport played Deer Park at West Valley after the newspaper went to press Tuesday, Dec. 30. Tuesday, Jan. 6, the Grizzlies will host Riverside, with the game starting at 7 p.m.
Lady Grizzlies lose tournament game
NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost their first game after Winter Break in a tournament hosted by West Valley in Spokane.
Newport (3-5, 2-2) went against Medical Lake (25, 0-0) Saturday, Dec. 27, losing 52-22.
They next played Northport (5-3, 2-3) Tuesday, Dec. 30 after The Miner’s weekly deadline as part of the tournament.
The Grizzlies continue their season at home against Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Spartan wrestling hosts Big Teams Tournament
PRIEST RIVER — The Spartan wrestling team competed at St. Maries High School Tuesday, Dec. 30 after the newspaper’s deadline. Priest River Lamanna High hosts the Big Teams Open Tournament Saturday, Jan. 3 (TBA).
