NEWPORT — The Pend Oreille Christmas Bird Count for 2025 was held Saturday, Dec. 20, with fewer species counted this year than in past years, says bird count organizer John Stuart. This is the 23rd year the Christmas Bird Count has been held.

“Our species count was 41; it is usually in the 48-50 range,” Stuart says. “Woodpeckers and jay numbers were low and no one recorded a pileated woodpecker.”

Birds were counted by nine people in cars and a dozen feeder watchers during the Dec. 20 event.

“Weather was overcast and about 36 degrees and visibility was excellent for finding birds,” he says. “With the weather being quite mild and warmish, there were lots of robins in the area, but waxwings and crossbills went uncounted and only a few evening grosbeaks and pine siskins were found.”

Stuart thanked everyone who participated.
