Grizzly boys struggle with Stags
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Deer Park Stags overpowered the Newport Grizzly boys ‘basketball team in Newport’s second game in the Eagle Holiday Classic tournament at West Valley in Spokane Valley Tuesday, Dec. 30. Deer Park got the 65-31 win.
Deer Park ran up a 10-point first quarter lead in the first quarter. The second quarter was closer, but Deer Park still added a point to their lead, up 2918 at the half. The second half was even tougher for Newport, with the Grizzlies scoring just three points in the final period. Damien Hamberg led Newport scoring with 10 points.
Newport hosted Riverside Tuesday, Jan. 6 after The Miner went to press. Friday, Jan. 9, Newport is at home again Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Saturday the Grizzlies go to Davenport for a 7:30 p.m. game. Newport hosts St. George’s Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
Spartan boys on the road next games
PRIEST RIVER - Priest River played Sandpoint Tuesday at home after the newspaper went to press. Priest River hits the road for the next two games, going to Orofino for a 5 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 9 and Grangeville Saturday, Jan. 10 for a noon game.
Lady Panthers lose, win after return
CUSICK — The Cusick High School girls’ basketball team resumed play last week, winning and losing once.
Friday, Jan. 2, the Panthers (2-6, 1-5) played Chesterton (2-7) at the Spokane Hub, winning 44-31 in a back-and-forth game through all four quarters.
Chesterton took the lead 8-6 in the first quarter, but lost it in the second, after which they headed into intermission with the Panthers winning 22-13. Though Chesterton managed to recover the lead in the third quarter, scoring 14-8, Cusick pulled ahead yet again, ending the fourth quarter 14-4.
The Panthers next visited Northeast 1B league rival Selkirk (8-2, 5-0) Saturday, Jan. 3, losing the rematch 57-51. (See related story.)
Tuesday, Jan. 6 after The Miner’s weekly deadline, Cusick hosted Northport.
This weekend, they visit Curlew at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 before hosting Republic at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. Next Tuesday, Jan. 13, Cusick visits Inchelium at 6 p.m.
Lady Grizzlies lose second tournament game
NEWPORT — Over Winter Break, the Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost their second game in a tournament hosted by West Valley in Spokane. The Grizzlies (3-6, 2-2) lost to Northport 36-23 Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Tuesday, Jan. 6 after The Miner’s weekly deadline they hosted Riverside, their first game after Winter Break.
This weekend, Newport hosts Davenport at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, then visits Reardan at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. Next week the Grizzlies host St. George’s at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13.
