Cusick boys best Selkirk

IONE – The Cusick boys’ basketball team got a 66-53 road win at Selkirk Saturday, Jan. 3.

“It was a hell of a game,” Cusick coach Raymond Ostlie says. “It was back and forth in the beginning, but the boys got the lead in the first half and kept it.”

Ostlie says he had had a scare when a starting guard, Thomas Sullivan, came down with food poisoning just before the game started.

“But he played through it,” Ostlie says, scoring 12 points. “He subbed himself out a few times.”

Cusick led 19-13 after the first quarter and stretched that to 34-24 by halftime. Selkirk came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring Cusick 19-15. Cusick finished with a 17-10 final period to seal the win.

Ostlie says he has a new player, Parker Wayne, a 6-foot, 2-inch senior.

“He got 12 rebounds,” Ostlie says. Cusick scoring was led by Daniel Lyon, with 16 points. The Panthers had three other players scoring in double figures. In addition to Sullivan’s dozen points, Mylind Whitford scored 15 and Judah Sutton scored 14, a personal record for him.

Cusick (6-4, 3-3) played Northport (5-0, 7-4) at home Tuesday, Jan. 6, after the newspaper went to print. The Panthers play Curlew (0-4, 10) Friday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 Cusick hosts Republic (3-1, 5-4) for a 6 p.m. game.
