PRIEST RIVER — The Spartan wrestling team took second place overall at their home tournament, the Backwoods Brawl, at Priest River Lamanna Jr./ Sr. High Saturday, Jan. 3.
In the round robin Justin Hopkins, 98-pounds, Grady Caudill, 106, and Tadhg McLaimtaig,113, won top spots, with Liam Pettit, 126, and Darien Raztlaff, 215, also winning their weight classes. The Spartans placed second out of 10 scoring teams with an overall score of 158, only bested by St. Maries with 197.
Hopkins won both of his matches by pin and Caudill and McLaimtaig won both of their matches with a first-round pin. Pettit won his first match by pin and then beat out a fellow teammate by a 7-0 decision to win the gold. Ratzlaff won his semifinals match via pin against a Newport opponent and then went on to win against St. Maries via an 18-1 technical fall in the championship bout.
David Harbison, 126, won one match by pin and Bill Rapier, 144, won two bouts by pins.
Priest River hosted Riverside and Timberlake for a dual Tuesday after the newspaper’s deadline. Coming up, the Spartans travel to Lewiston Friday, Jan. 9 (TBA).
