METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team resumed play last week with another win and loss.
Friday, Jan. 2, the Rangers (8-2, 5-0) visited Oakesdale (8-0, 5-0), losing their first game after Winter Break 54-14.
“We obviously did not perform the way we were hoping,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says.
Oakesdale is a good team, Cain says, playing aggressively with energy the Rangers couldn’t match from the first quarter. Heading into intermission, Oakesdale was winning 29-2, and though Selkirk managed to score 10 points to Oakesdale’s 12 in the third quarter, Oakesdale’s lead only widened in the fourth quarter.
“While they did a good job on us, I felt that we also committed a lot of unforced mistakes,” Cain says. Selkirk shot just 14% from the field, lost the battle on the boards and had “too many” turnovers. “And just weren’t able to get in any rhythm,” Cain says.
Regardless, Cain still believes the Rangers took a lot of positive lessons from the game.
They next hosted Northeast 1B North league rival Cusick (2-6, 1-5) Saturday, Jan. 3, recovering from their loss against Oakesdale with a 57-51 rematch win. (See related story.)
Tuesday, Jan. 6 after The Miner’s weekly deadline, Selkirk hosted Inchelium.
This weekend, they visit Republic at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 before hosting Northport at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. Next Tuesday, Jan. 13, Selkirk visits Curlew at 6 p.m.
