METALINE FALLS — In a Northeast 1B North league rematch, the Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team (8-2, 5-0) defeated rival Cusick (2-6, 1-5) 57-51, Saturday, Jan. 3 at home.
“This was a good bounce back game after a disappointing outing the night before,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says. Friday, Jan. 2, the Rangers had lost to the Oakesdale Nighthawks 54-14. (See related story.)
Selkirk took an 11-7 lead from the first quarter. The Panthers were not far behind, scoring 13 points to the Rangers’ 17 in the second quarter with the teams heading into intermission 28-20.
Though Cusick was still behind 45-32 after the third quarter, the Panthers surprised the Rangers with a 3-pointer run in the last three minutes and 30 seconds of the game, when Jazzlyn Rutherford scored four of five attempted 3-pointers. Before that, Selkirk had been up 53-37.
“We did a good job getting the ball inside, outscoring Cusick 24-10 in the paint,” Cain says. “It was a good thing we did.”
The Rangers only attempted three 3-pointers the whole game, hitting one of them. The Panthers hit eight attempts out of 26, including Rutherford’s.
Regardless, Selkirk scored a season high 57 points on 44% shooting.
Millie Rice and Chloe Kardos both led in points with 16 each. Kinley Petrich added 11, Jessa Culianan 7 and Laylee Strickler 6.
Kardos also led in rebounds. She had 11, while Culianan and Rice had 10 and nine. Marisa Lyons led alongside Culianan and Rice in assists, each Ranger adding three each. Petrich alone led with six steals.
“Always good to get a league win,” Cain says.
