NEWPORT — The non-profit Evergreen Art Association offers a $1,000 Visual Art Scholarship to graduating seniors from the area schools or home school.
Seniors who plan to pursue a career in any visual art field including Fine Arts, Commercial Art, Computer Graphics, Web Site Design, Photography and many others are encouraged to apply. The $1,000 scholarship can be used toward any institution of higher learning.
Newport High School art teacher Elyce Tallman was the scholarship recipient in 2010.
“I was so excited to receive the Evergreen Art Association Scholarship,” Tallman said. “It was great to see the local art community supporting students pursuing an art degree. I was so appreciative.”
In addition to teaching visual art, Tallman makes her own pottery called Mad Hatter Pottery. Along with the application, the applicant must submit five original works of art, a high school transcript, a letter of recommendation from a teacher and an essay about themselves. The essay should include what their artwork means to them, why they deserve the scholarship and how they plan to finance the balance of their education. The deadline to apply is Saturday, April 25 by 7 p.m. For information and application, email the Evergreen Art Association Scholarship Committee at evergreenartassociation@ yahoo.com.
