Name: Greg Vaughn Age: 60 Town: Newport Artistic medium: Small woodworking/ laser engraving Question: Why do you make this type of art?
Answer: My interest in/enjoyment of woodworking was first ignited when I was 14 years old and a freshman at Newport High School. Don Goertzen was my instructor, and I fell in love with everything about it. As a retired teacher myself, technology has always intrigued me and with laser engraving coming online for personal use, I jumped in three years ago. It opened up a whole new world for my woodworking.
Q: What does your artwork represent?
A: Anytime my creations are somehow connected to somebody in a personal way, I feel that represents who I am. I have always enjoyed doing things that will hopefully make somebody happy or help them in some way.
Q: What inspires you?
A: My customers! I am asked weekly to create something for somebody that I know will have meaning for them and will be part of their lives from that moment on. It’s a great feeling to know that I am given that opportunity, even in a small way.
Q: How do you make it?
A: It all starts with an idea, a tape measure and a wonderful product called wood. Most of the time there is no absolute route or path to the finish, but I usually get there eventually.
Q: What does your art mean to you?
A: It is complete satisfaction when I deliver a creation to someone and see that it holds a personal meaning to them. I would like to think that a few of my creations will be handed down to generations long after my time here. For example, my baby birth boards, and pet birth boards have been well-received as a keepsake for families.
Q: Do you have any exhibits/shows coming up?
A: We travel extensively in the winter months, but I am already in the shop creating spring items for upcoming farmer’s markets and craft shows. A large proportion of my sales are through social media and small-town word of mouth, which is greatly appreciated!
