NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies boys’ basketball team simply couldn’t score enough against Davenport and Reardan Friday and Saturday nights, Jan. 9-10.
Friday night, the Grizzlies were at home for a Northeast 2B North league game with Davenport, finishing on the short end of a 66-28 score.
Davenport got ahead early on a 16-7 first quarter run, stretching that to a 34-16 halftime lead. Newport didn’t score more than nine points in any one quarter.
Jayden Hunt scored six points, as did Jamison Oaks. Damien Hamberg had four points and Noah Erickson hit a 3-pointer.
Things didn’t go a lot better the next night, when the Grizzlies went to Reardan for another league game. Reardan go the 75-25 win after a strong first half, outscoring the Grizzlies 25-4 in the first quarter and 22-6 in the second.
Newport’s third quarter was better. They scored 11 to Reardan’s 20 and teams played a low scoring fourth 10-4 fourth quarter, with the Screaming Eagles getting the win.
Hamberg was the top scorer for Newport with nine points.
Northwest Christian (7-0, 12-0) leads the Northeast 2B North league, followed by Reardan (6-1, 12-2), Davenport (3-3, 7-5), Kettle Falls (3-3, 7-7), St. George’s (2-4, 4-11), Chewelah (2-5, 7-6) and Newport (0-6, 0-11).
Newport played St. George’s at home Tuesday, Jan. 13 after deadline. Saturday, Jan. 17 the Grizzlies go to Kettle Falls for a 4:30 p.m. game and Tuesday, Jan. 20, Newport is back home for a 6 p.m. game with Chewelah.
