NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost both their games after Winter Break, putting the Grizzlies at fifth in the Northeast 2B North league.
Newport (3-8, 2-4) hosted Davenport (9-2, 4-2) Friday, Jan. 9, losing 67-16. Davenport pulled ahead of Newport with a 19-5 lead from the first quarter, which Newport couldn’t retake through the end of the fourth quarter.
Sammi Tellessen led in points with 5. Kaelynn Smith added 4 points, and Makayla Peone hit a 3-pointer and added 3. The player( s) who added another 4 points had not been identified by The Miner’s deadline Tuesday, Jan. 13.
They next visited Reardan (12-2, 6-0) Saturday, Jan. 10 and lost 68-10. Much like the Davenport game, the Grizzlies fell behind Reardan 22-3 from the first quarter and failed to recover in the second, third or fourth quarters. The Grizzlies scored half their points in the second quarter, where Reardan again scored 22 points.
Grace Parry led in points with 7. Tellessen scored a 3-pointer and added 3.
Tuesday, Jan. 13, Newport hosted St. George’s after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Their Tuesday, Jan. 6 home game against Riverside was cancelled.
Newport next visits Kettle Falls at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, then host Jenkins from Chewelah at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20.
