Lady Rangers win again, then lose

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team won once, but lost twice last week, putting the Rangers at second in the Northeast 1B North league.

Selkirk’s won Tuesday, Jan. 6 at home against Inchelium (8-4, 5-3). Much like the first time the schools played each other, that game was a onescore contest through all four quarters, ending with Selkirk (9-4, 6-2) on top at 56-55.

“This was a fun game,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says. “We were fortunate to come out on top again.”

With only two minutes left, Selkirk was down by 4 points when Millie Rice scored a 3-pointer, bringing the score to 52-53. Still down by 1 point, Marisa Lyons forced a turnover, and Chloe Kardos followed up with a 2-point bucket off an assist from Kinley Petrich. This allowed the Rangers to pull into the lead 54-53. With only 17 seconds left to finish off the scoring, Rice made two free throws.

“We finished with a good defensive stand forcing a very tough shot to secure the win,” Cain says.

Rice and Kardos scored the most points with 26 and 10. Kardos led in rebounds with 11, while Petrich had seven. Lyons and Laylee Strickler added six and four assists, Rice another four steals.

After this fun game was a rough one, Cain says. Selkirk visited Republic (10-0, 6-0) Friday, Jan. 9 and, after failing to get into any offensive rhythm from the first quarter, lost 49-17. The Rangers’ shooting from the field and foul line, Cain says, were the worst of the season.

“We looked flat,” Cain says. “Not sure if that was the cause of the offensive struggles or the offensive struggles were the reason for being flat.”

Regardless, Jessa Culianan managed to get 13 rebounds.

The Rangers lost again Saturday, Jan. 10 at home against Northport (9-3, 4-3) 36-34.

Though Selkirk was ahead 17-7 after the first quarter, their hot, offensive start eventually cooled off, Cain says. Northport and Selkirk headed into the fourth quarter 25-31, but Northport soon pulled ahead of Selkirk with an 11-3 lead.

“Our intensity was better and defensively we competed well,” Cain says. “But in the end our lack of offensive consistency kept us from keeping the lead we had built.”

Kardos led in points that night as well with 15. Culianan added seven rebounds, Petrich four steals.

Selkirk visited Curlew Tuesday, Jan. 13 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.

They next host Columbia at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, before visiting Mary Walker at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. Tuesday, Jan. 20, Selkirk visits Northport around 6 p.m.

“We were in a little bit of an offensive slump this weekend, but we will be looking to bounce back to form this week,” Cain says.
