CLARKSTON – The Newport High School girls’ wrestling team grappled their way to the top, winning first place at the first annual Bordertown Throwdown in Clarkston, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 9-10. There were 17 schools that competed.
“The girls team worked together over the weekend encouraging each other at every match even when they had to face teammates,” head girls’ coach Scott Pillers said. “They have seen for themselves what we have been telling them all season: we can be the number one team in the state if we put in the work.”
Addison Stigall won first place in the 135-pound bracket and scored 28 team points. In round one she won by fall over Alayna Weldon of Moscow at 44 seconds. Stigall went on to the exact same victory in round two against Elaina Dalton of Lewiston.
Clover Tannehill, 170, placed second and scored 32 team points.
Payton Bennett placed second in the 100-pound weight division and scored 11 team points. In round two Bennett won by fall in 23 seconds over Zoey Fouts of Priest River.
Bennett won by fall over Anabelle Miller of Deer Park 51 seconds into round three.
In round four Bennett won by tech fall over Jessica Simmet of Clarkston.
Then in round five Clarkston opponent Savannah Kanooth won by a 7-4 decision over Bennett.
LeeAna Peacock, 110-pounds, placed third and scored seven team points. In round one Peacock won by fall over Aleck Brown of Clarkston at 4:28. In round two Peacock won by tech fall over Abigail Lampert of Tekoa-Rosalia at 2:11.
Daphne Luna of Pullman went on to beat Peacock in round three by a fall at 2:42. She lost again in round four to Mattie Perkins of Spangle who pinned her at 4:49.
In the 125-pound weight bracket, Holly Waterman placed sixth and scored 10 team points.
In round one Brindle Beckner of Potlatch won by fall over Waterman at 4:43.
Waterman won by a 10-4 decision over Lela Rehder of Lewiston in round two. She went on to win by fall over Hattie Brown-Hayes of Lewiston at 51 seconds into round three. In round four Waterman won in sudden victory over Macijean Hodgin of Almira Coulee Hartline.
Waterman was defeated by Ella Palmer of Republic-Curlew in round five with a 14-3 major decision. In the quarterfinal, Evelyn Scott of Deer Park won by fall over Waterman at 1:19.
Savannah Garris, 130, placed second and scored 20 team points. She won by fall over Addison Vieux of Moscow at 5:46 in round one. In round two Garris won by fall over Aundrea Carter of Newport at only four seconds. She went on to defeat Daniella Lucas of Clarkston with a fall at 3:54 into round three.
In round four Garris won by fall over Lilly Huff of Moscow at 1:37. She received a bye in round five and won by fall in round six at 18 seconds against Raeshelle Keatts of Tekoa-Rosalia.
At 130-pounds Aundrea Carter won fourth and scored 10 team points.
