KENT – The Selkirk wrestling team may be small in numbers, but the boys had a couple big wins at the Gut Check Elite Tournament in Kent, Friday–Saturday, Jan. 9–10.
“These guys were also the highest placing 1B school there,” Selkirk coach J.L. Chantry said of the Rangers. “I am excited to see how far these guys can go this year.”
Junior Jaxson Chantry won second in the 150-pound weight division losing to Keagan Sieracki of Westlake Carrol, Texas by major decision, 20-4. Senior Jameson Davis placed third at 157-pounds with a 6-4 decision over White River’s Joshua Hansen in the third and fourth place match. Junior Tristan Vanarsdall, 175, also competed, but did not place going 0-2.
“These young men are working their butts off and I’m super proud of them,” Chantry said. “There’s nothing these young men can’t accomplish with the work ethic they have. Jaxson and Jameson have been wrestling since they were five and this is what happens when you put in the hard work and dedication to the sport.”
Chantry added that last weekend’s competition is the best Selkirk has ever done at Gut Check.
The tournament included over 100 of the top teams from around the country and international competitors from Canada. All weight classes featured 64 athletes and included state champs from all Washington classifications.
Next up, Selkirk travels to Tonasket for the Apple Pie Tournament Saturday, Jan. 17.
