There was a basketball tournament held Monday, Jan. 19, at Newport High School and Sadie Halstead Middles School.
It wasn’t your usual tournament. It featured players who don’t usually get in the tournaments, the junior varsity players.
“In B level schools, many times the junior varsity doesn’t get to play more than two quarters, or sometimes at all,” says Thad Treppanier, the Newport girls varsity basketball coach who organized this year’s tournament.
Four schools played, Newport, Cusick, Colfax and Freeman. The boys played at Sadie Halstead and the girls at Newport High School. Each of the teams played a couple games. We didn’t get the scores but the players and their fans seemed to enjoy the competition.
