Two more losses for Lady Grizzlies

NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost two more games last week, dropping the Grizzlies from fifth to sixth in the Northeast 2B North league.

Wednesday, Jan. 14, Newport (3-10, 2-6) hosted St. George’s (7-10, 3-6), losing 65-31. Davenport came out strong with a 21-4 lead from the first quarter, which Newport couldn’t retake through the end of the fourth quarter.

Sammi Tellessen led Newport with 20 points, 12 of which were from three 3-pointers. Grace Parry added 6 points.

Saturday, Jan. 17, Newport visited Kettle Falls (6-10, 3-5), losing again 38-30.

The teams were even from the start, heading into intermission with Kettle Falls barely ahead 20-19. But in the third quarter, Kettle Falls managed to widen the gap by 7 more points, tilting the score to 29-21. Newport kept even with Kettle Falls in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t take the lead, scoring 9-9 against the Bulldogs.

Grace Keck led Newport with 9 points, 3 of which were from a 3-pointer. Emma Crabtree added 6 points and one 3-pointer, Tellessen 8 points and one 3-pointer.

Tuesday, Jan. 20, Newport hosted Jenkins from Chewelah after The Miner’s weekly deadline.

This weekend, the Grizzlies host Northwest Christian from Colbert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, then visit Colville at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
