METALINE FALLS — Despite winning two of three games last week, the Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team dropped from second to third in the Northeast 1B North league.
Tuesday, Jan. 13, Selkirk (11-5, 7-3) visited Curlew (12-4, 7-3), losing 32-29 in what Selkirk coach Kelly Cain said was a game of attrition.
Selkirk and Curlew were even after the first quarter, the score 6-6 as the teams headed into the second quarter. Selkirk managed to take a 3-point lead by intermission and widened it to 5 points in the third quarter, which ended with Selkirk leading 21-16.
After taking a total of 52 foul shots, neither team could get into a flow, Cain said. Both teams had three players foul out.
Still, Curlew came out on top, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter — double Selkirk’s 8 points — and getting the win.
“It was a really choppy game with both teams competing hard,” Cain said.
The top scorers were Millie Rice and Kinley Petrich, with 12 and 7 points.
Rice also led in rebounds with 11 alongside Laylee Strickler, who had eight. Petrich added three steals.
“I was happy with the way the girls battled,” Cain said.
Selkirk got their first win Friday, Jan. 16 at home against Columbia (0-14, 0-12), who lost 52-17. Selkirk took a 9-2 lead over Columbia from the first quarter and kept it through the end of the fourth.
“We took care of business in this one,” Cain said. Rice and Petrich were top scorers again, leading Selkirk with 22 and 8 points.
Jessa Culianan and Lily Smith each added seven rebounds, Marisa Lyons 10 assists. Rice and Strickler had four steals each.
“Ball security was good with only eight turnovers,” Cain said.
Selkirk won again Saturday, Jan. 17 when they visited Mary Walker from Springdale (2-14, 2-6), who lost 56-32. Selkirk took an even bigger lead over Columbia, 17-4 in the first quarter. They were still ahead even after the fourth quarter, when Columbia scored 8 points — 1 more than Selkirk’s 7 points.
“We jumped out to a 14-0 lead and were able to continue to add on,” Cain said.
Rice, Chloe Kardos and Lyons were the top scorers with 19, 10 and 10 points.
Culianan added 10 rebounds, Lyons six assists. Petrich and Lyons had eight and six steals.
“Good all-around effort by the team,” Cain said. Tuesday, Jan. 20, Selkirk visited Northport after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
The Rangers next visit Cusick at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 for the Battle for the Paddle. Saturday, Jan. 24, which is also Senior Night, Selkirk hosts Republic at 4:30 p.m.
