Newport boys fall to undefeated Crusaders

NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzly boys’ basketball team didn’t have any more luck than the previous 15 teams that played the undefeated Northwest Christian Crusaders. Newport lost 7926 Friday, Jan. 23, in Newport.

The Crusaders got off to a 31-11 first quarter lead and were up 59-20 at the half.

Jamieson Oaks led Newport scoring with 11 points, including a 3-pointer. Des Opland also had a 3-pointer in his five points.

The next night the Grizzlies went to Colville for a non-league game, with Colville getting the 90-37 win. Newport had a slow first quarter, outscored 25-8. Oakes again led Newport scoring with 10 points. Gryphen Bilaski hit a 3-pointer, as did Keaton Schultz.

The Grizzlies probably had their best outing of the week when they played Chewelah Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Newport.

Newport trailed by one point in the first quarter and by seven at the half, but a two-point third quarter did them in, as Chewelah got the Northeast 1B North league win, 56-30.

Oaks again led Newport with 10 points, but the Grizzlies sank four 3-pointers, with Jason Totland, Jackson Coston, Brad Martin and Jordan Sawyer all hitting one.

Next up for Newport is a rematch with Priest River Friday, Jan. 30 in Newport at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday Jan. 31, they host Reardan (10-1, 16-2) at 4:30 p.m. They wrap up their regular season on the road Tuesday, Feb. 3 with a game at Davenport (5-4, 9-9) at 6 p.m.
