Lady Grizzlies net one, lose two

NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ varsity basketball team won one game and lost two last week, keeping them at sixth in the Northeast 2B North league.

Tuesday, Jan. 20, Newport (12-4, 7-3) hosted Jenkins from Chewelah (16-1, 10-0), winning 34-19.

Newport took the lead 7-2 from the first quarter, and the teams headed into intermission 15-8. Newport only continued to widen the gap, scoring 11-4 against Jenkins in the third quarter and 8-7 in the fourth.

Grace Keck led Newport with 13 points, 3 of which were from a 3-pointer. Sammi Tellessen and Emma Crabtree had 9 and 6 points, with one 3-pointer each.

Friday, Jan. 23, Newport hosted Northwest Christian (15-1, 10-1), losing 61-11.

They lost again Saturday, Jan. 24 when Newport visited Colville (10-5, 1-1), who won 68-28.

Colville took the lead 19-7 from the start, holding onto it through the end of the game — though the Grizzlies managed to match Colville 11-11 in the fourth quarter.

Tellessen led Newport with 18 points, 6 of which were from two 2-pointers. Julie Bowman had 5 points, including one 3-pointer.

The Grizzlies rematch Priest River in the 2026 Battle of the Border at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at home. They next host Reardan at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, before ending their season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Davenport.
