WIAA names Lady Ranger Athlete of the Week
METALINE FALLS — A Selkirk High School student was recognized by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as 1B Athlete of the Week earlier this month.
Sophomore Millie Rice led Selkirk to a league victory over Inchelium Tuesday, Jan. 6. According to the WIAA, Rice had a standout shooting performance, scoring a total of 26 points, including six 3-pointers and all her free throws. Rice also got five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
“Her all-around effort on both ends of the floor showcased her growing impact and leadership as a sophomore,” the WIAA wrote on its website, wiaa. com.
Cusick boys beat St. Johns Endicott
CUSICK – The Cusick boys basketball team had a busy week, playing four games in six days.
Tuesday, Jan. 20 they traveled to Republic, where they lost 68-49.
Thursday, Jan. 22, they were home against Cusick for the Battle for the Paddle, a non-league spirit game that they lost 63-61.
“It came down to the last seconds,” Cusick coach Raymond Ostlie says. With 2.8 seconds left, the Panthers inbounded a ball and got off a 3-point shot, but it didn’t fall.
Monday night, Jan. 26, the Panthers were home again against St. Johns Endicott for another nonleague game. They won that game 74-49.
The Panthers play in the league tournament, but Ostlie says he doesn’t yet know the date and time.
Lady Spartans break losing streak
PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna High School girls’ varsity basketball team won last week’s game against Clark Fork, breaking a five-game losing streak and keeping them at fourth in the 3A Central Idaho league.
Priest River (6-7, 1-5) hosted Clark Fork (4-8, 0-3) Monday, Jan. 19, winning 46-22.
McKinley Burgess- Duquette led Priest River with 14 points, according to the Bonner County Daily Bee. Haylee Jepson-Church and Haley rice added 11 points and two 3-pointers each, Aleigha Jensen 7 points and one 3-pointer.
The Spartans next visit St. Maries at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, before visiting Newport at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 for the 2026 Battle of the Border. They end their season at home against Orofino at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.
Priest Rive wrestling away this week
PRIEST RIVER – The Spartan varsity wrestling team competed at the Battle of The Border at Newport High School Tuesday, Jan. 27 after the newspaper’s deadline. On Thursday, Jan. 29 Priest River travels to St. Maries High School, then to Coeur D’Alene High School Friday, Jan. 30.
