Learn about emergency response next month

NEWPORT — Pend Oreille County’s Community Emergency Response Team will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Harvest Community Fellowship at 52 Sitton Road, just off Highway 2, south of Newport.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

It is intended for anyone interested in learning about preparedness, volunteering or upcoming training opportunities.

Participation in CERT training does not require a commitment to join the team.

For more information, community members may call or text Jennifer Ekizian at 208-651-9096. CERT invites people to learn more about local emergency preparedness, free public training and ways neighbors can support one another during emergencies. CERT works alongside local fire, EMS, law enforcement, Search and Rescue and Emergency Management, focusing on low-risk, high-impact support and community readiness before, during and after emergencies.

Free diabetes support group starts Feb. 5

NEWPORT — A free monthly support group for people living with diabetes will launch at 3 p.m. Feb. 5 at Newport Health Center, located at the intersection of Spruce Street and Cass Avenue.

Group members need not be a Newport Health Center patient to attend, according to a hospital district news release announcing the support group.

The group will be facilitated by Denise Rowsey, a registered nurse and certified diabetes care and education specialist.

Each session focuses on a different diabetes-related topic, and attendees can share experiences and support one another.

Moving forward, the Diabetes Support Group will continue to be held at 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. For more information, reach out to Rowsey at the Newport Health Center, 509-4473139.
