CUSICK — Responsible Growth * Northeast Washington and Selkirk Alliance for Science are partnering on an upcoming event to raise public awareness of the need to prepare and protect one’s home in the event of a catastrophic wildfire.
“Homestead Wildfire Protection & Prevention” will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at the Camas Center, 1821 North LeClerc Rd. This is the second in NEW and SAS’s series of wildfire programs.
Only three years ago, the Oregon Road wildfire swept near the Pend Oreille County lines, burning over 10,817 acres of forest and timberland in neighboring Spokane County and destroying 100 homes before it was brought under control.
Combustion, powerful winds and extremely dry conditions played a role in that devastating fire.
Whether residents live in Pend Oreille County, Bonner County, Spokane County or elsewhere, NEW and SAS encourage them to join the program. There is no cost, though donations are always welcomed, and breakfast sweets, coffee, juice and lunch will be served.
Additionally, there will be terrific door prizes, according to a NEW news release.
The program is sponsored by the Kalispel Tribe through its Charitable Fund and by the Inatai Foundation.
