NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies boys’ basketball team played the last game of a long 19-game regular season against Davenport (10-10, 6-5) Tuesday, Feb. 3 after the newspaper went to press.
Newport (0-18, 0-11) was in action at home Friday, Jan. 31, against Priest River in the Battle of the Border, losing to their rivals 80-63. Priest River got out to a 2110 first quarter lead and increased that substantially in the second quarter, up 4419 at halftime. Newport trimmed the Spartans’ lead with with a 29-16 third quarter, pulling to within a dozen by the end of the quarter. But the Spartans finished the game with a 21-17 fourth quarter to get the win.
Jaimison Oaks scored 22 for Newport, including a pair of 3-pointers. Damien Hamberg scored 15. Des Opland scored a dozen points and Brad Martin chipped in nine points, including a 3-pointer. Keaton Shults also hit a 3-pointer.
Newport played Reardan at home Saturday, with Reardan (17-3, 10-2) getting the 70-25 win. The Grizzlies couldn’t overcome a two-point second quarter against the Screaming Eagles, trailing 36-12 at the half.
Both teams had a low scoring fourth quarter, with Reardan scoring six and Newport two.
Hamberg’s seven points was the most a Newport player scored against the No. 2 ranked team in the Northeast 2B North league. Martin scored five points and Carter Brandtner had four points. Jackson Coston hit a 3-pointer.
