METALINE FALLS — In a loser-out Northeast 1B league crossover game Friday, Jan. 30, the Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team hosted Odessa and won, advancing to round one of playoffs.
Third-seeded Selkirk (13-7, 8-4) defeated sixth-seeded Odessa (4-14, 2-9) 71-45, earning their highest score so far this season.
“We came out and really met the challenge,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain said.
The Rangers took a 13-9 lead from the first quarter, more than tripling their score in the second quarter. By intermission, Odessa was behind 41-22.
Though Odessa managed to keep up with Selkirk 10-11 in the third quarter, the Rangers held onto their lead through the fourth quarter, when they scored 19-13 over the Tigers.
Selkirk moved the ball well, knocking down shots at a good rate, Cain said. With only 12 turnovers, their ball security was good, and their effort and energy on point.
“It was balanced scoring with a lot of different players contributing on the offensive end,” Cain said.
Millie Rice led Selkirk with 22 points, followed by Laylee Strickler and Kinley Petrich with 18 and 16.
Petrich and Rice also had eight and seven rebounds. Marisa Lyons had six assists, while Petrich and Strickler had four steals each.
They next visited Valley Christian Tuesday, Feb. 3 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
Selkirk plays again at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, with the opponent still to be determined as of Monday, Feb. 2. High seed will host.
