NEWPORT – The Priest River Spartan boys’ basketball team won the Border Battle against Newport, beating the Grizzlies 80-63 in Newport Friday, Jan. 30.
It was a solid win for the Spartans, who were ahead 44-19 at halftime. Ian Lamanna scored 32 to lead all scorers. He hit 10 of 12 free throws. Madden Redinger scored 13.
Jameson Oaks led Newport scoring with 22 points.
Priest River traveled to Orofino the next night for a Central Idaho League game.
“After scoring 80 points against Newport the Spartans had a little reality check on Saturday against the Conference leading Orofino Maniacs,” Priest River coach Brian Hall said. The Spartans committed 21 turnovers and lost 65-34.
Redinger led Priest River scoring with10 points, while Lamanna was held to six points. The Spartans only scored two points in the second quarter and five in the fourth.
Thursday, Jan. 30, the Spartans played Kellogg in another league game, losing 81-62 to at Kellogg.
The game was close in the first quarter, with the Spartans trailing 19-18. But Kellogg had a good second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 27-13. The teams played a 2020 third quarter before Kellogg sealed the win a 15-11 final quarter.
Lamanna led Spartan scoring with 20 points. Brady Hatten was also in double figures with a 16-point game. Hatten also grabbed nine rebounds.
The Spartans played Coeur du Christ Tuesday after the newspaper deadline. They travel to St. Maries Friday, Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. game.
