REPUBLIC – The Cusick Panthers boys’ basketball team lost 60-58 to Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame of Spokane Saturday, Jan. 31. Chesterton (7-8, 4-8) was the fifth ranked team in the Northeast 1B South division.
The loser out game ended the Panther’s season. Cusick (8-11, 4-8) finished in fifth place in the Northeast 1B North division.

Lady Grizzlies lose thrice
NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost thrice recently, keeping the Grizzlies sixth in the Northeast 2B North league.
Saturday, Jan. 24, Newport (4-14, 3-8) visited Colville (11-6, 2-2), losing 64-34.
Colville took a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and continued to expand it until the fourth quarter, when Newport managed to score an even 11-11.
Sammi Tellessen led Newport with 18 points, 6 of which were from two 2-pointers. Julie Bowman, with 5 points, made one 3-pointer.
Newport next hosted Priest River (8-8, 2-6) for the 2026 Battle of the Border Friday, Jan. 30, with the Spartans defeating their cross-border rival Grizzlies 50-38. (See related story.)
Saturday, Jan. 31, Newport hosted Reardan (17-3, 11-1), losing again 63-20.
Reardan took an even greater lead in the first quarter, heading into intermission with Newport behind 42-8. Newport was still behind in the fourth quarter, when Reardan only outscored them 6-3.
Tellessen led Newport again with 9 points, all of which were from 3-pointers. Emma Crabtree made another 3-pointer.
The Grizzlies visited Davenport Tuesday, Feb. 3 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Next, they host Riverside at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Rangers on the road
IONE – The Selkirk High School wrestling team is headed to Davenport for a dual team tournament Saturday, Feb. 7 with the state qualifier the following weekend in Freeman on Saturday, Feb. 14.
