NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team lost in the first round of the District 6 2B tournament Saturday, Feb. 7, following another win and loss.
Newport (5-16, 3-9) visited Davenport (17-4, 9-4) Tuesday, Feb. 3, losing 63-21.
Davenport took a 10-6 lead in the first quarter, and the Grizzlies were unable to keep up as the Gorillas continued to widen the point gap.
Grace Keck led Newport with 15 points, 6 of which were from two 3-pointers. Grace Parry added 4 points, Emma Crabtree 2.
Breaking a five-game losing streak, Newport hosted Riverside (0-19, 0-5) and won 57-19 Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Newport refused to let Riverside get ahead, taking a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and consistently scoring more than double their opponents in the second, third and fourth quarters.
Sammi Tellessen led Newport with 16 points, 6 of which were from two 3-pointers. Crabtree added 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Grace Keck and Julie Bowman, with 7 points each, both had one 3-pointer.
For the first round of the tournament, Newport visited Lind-Ritzville/ Sprague (16-5, 7-3) Saturday, Feb. 7, losing again 69-16.
With a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, Lind-Ritzville/ Sprague was ahead for the rest of the game. Newport only managed to score a few points in the second and third quarters, until the fourth quarter, when they kept pace with Lind-Ritzville/ Sprague 11-11.
Bowman led Newport with 5 points, 3 of which were from a 3-pointer. Tellessen scored Newport’s other 3-pointer, adding 3 points. Parry added another 3 points.
Having lost in the first round, Newport plays in a loser-out game Saturday, Feb. 14 at West Valley, with time and opponent to be determined as of Monday, Feb. 9.
