Lady Rangers on to third round

METALINE FALLS — After a loss and win last week, the Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team is on to the third round of the Northeast 1B league tournament.

Tuesday, Feb. 3, Selkirk (14-8, 8-4) visited Valley Christian (17-3, 9-2), losing 45-39.

Valley Christian took a 10-8 lead in the first quarter, only outscoring Selkirk 13-12 in the second quarter. The teams headed into intermission 23-20 and in the third quarter, Selkirk managed to overtake Valley Christian 11-6, going up by 2 points. But in the fourth quarter, Valley Christian outscored Selkirk by 8 points after making 10 of their 13 foul shots.

“We had too many turnovers that turned into points for Valley Christian,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain says.

The Rangers had trouble getting into an offensive flow, Cain says, and didn’t respond well when Valley Christian sped them up with their press.

“We fought hard,” Cain says. “But between the turnovers and getting outscored at the foul line, it was too much to overcome.”

Millie Rice led Selkirk with 23 points. Kinley Petrich added seven points. Petrich also led in rebounds alongside Lily Smith, with seven each. Jessa Culianan, Chloe Kardos and Rice all added six. Marisa Lyons led in assists with six, while Petrich and Laylee Strickler both led with four steals each.

Having lost to Valley Christian, Selkirk visited Deer Park Saturday, Feb. 7 for a loser-out game against Chesterton Academy (6-13, 4-5), winning 46-36.

“This was our second loser-out game of the post-season,” Cain says.

Selkirk was in control of the game from the start, Cain says.

The Rangers jumped out to an early 15-10 lead in the first quarter, after back-to-back 3-pointers by Rice and Petrich. Chesterton Academy — a tall team that’s tough on the boards, Cain says — struggled to keep up, heading into intermission 31-14 behind Selkirk. Though Chesterton Academy outscored Selkirk 9-7 and 13-8 in the third and fourth quarters, it wasn’t enough.

“We did a good job battling them,” Cain says. Rice led Selkirk with 17 points, followed by Kardos with 12.

Four players got at least six rebounds: Kardos and Rice, who had seven each, and Culianan and Lily Smith, who had six each. Lyons added six assists, Petrich three steals.

“We out rebounded them by only two,” Cain says. “But considering when we played them earlier in the season and they out rebounded us by 25, it was a good overall effort.”

The Rangers next play Wellpinit at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, also at Deer Park. Saturday, Feb. 14, they have another game at Deer Park at 2 p.m., with opponent to be determined as of Monday, Feb. 9.
